Aretha Franklin Tops List of Memphis Music Hall Inductees

Soul songstress Aretha Franklin is headlining a diverse and influential class of performers and music industry personalities who are being inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.

The hall said Wednesday that Franklin, a Memphis native, will be honored at an induction ceremony Nov. 1.

Gladys Knight, the Four Tops, Dee Dee Bridgewater & More to Perform at Free Aretha Franklin Tribute Concert

Gladys Knight, the Four Tops, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Raheem DeVaughn, Johnny Gill and Angie Stone lead a lineup of artists honoring the late Aretha Franklin during a free public concert the night before her funeral in Detroit.

The concert will be part of a four-day memorial that includes public viewings at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and at New Bethel Baptist Church. The funeral on Aug. 31, at Greater Grace Temple is for friends, family and invited guests only and will feature performances by Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Faith Hill, Jennifer Holiday, Chaka Khan, Ron Isley and others will be performing during the ceremony.

Bruce Springsteen Surprises Steven Van Zandt at New Jersey Hall of Fame Induction

Bruce Springsteen made a surprise appearance at Asbury Park’s Convention Hall to introduce his longtime friend and guitarist Steven Van Zandt into the hall. Springsteen himself was admitted a decade earlier.

The two joined forces onstage and played “I Don’t Want To Go Home,” trading vocals and eventually welcoming the entire class of inductees – and many of their family members – onstage to close the show. “We did the impossible: We made New Jersey hip,” said Van Zandt, who is from Middletown.

Music Modernization Act Expected to Be Introduced in Congress

The Music Modernization Act, which is scheduled for markup by the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday combines three previously introduced bills, all of which have been introduced in the Senate, along with an additional rate-setting change. The most important of these bills creates an organization to collect and distribute mechanical royalties from streaming services.
