Seismic Shift at Curtis: Met Star Eric Owens and Danielle Orlando to Take Over Opera Department

At the Curtis Institute of Music, where faculty members tend to stay for decades, a seismic shift is coming to the school’s storied opera and vocal studies department. Eric Owens and Danielle Orlando will assume co-equal roles as head of opera starting in the 2019-20 season, the school announced last week.

The joint appointment pairs an active, worldwide performer with a veteran opera coach and educator. Both have long histories with Curtis.

Philadelphia Orchestra dives in with a streaming music service

Move over, Spotify and Deezer: There’s a new digital portal for classical music – “Orchestra on Demand” – and it’s all Philadelphian, all the time. Launched Monday by the Philadelphia Orchestra, the website offers a sprinkling of concerts from current and past seasons, dating back to Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s inaugural 2012-13 season as music director. Additional content includes concerts by former music director Wolfgang Sawallisch.
