Brian Balmages Visits J.W. Pepper: Music, Meaning, and the Gift of Giving
Recently, J.W. Pepper welcomed internationally acclaimed composer and conductor Brian Balmages for a special visit and interview—an opportunity to spend time with one of today’s most influential voices in band and orchestral music.
Brian Balmages is known worldwide for a body of work that spans orchestral, band, and chamber music, performed by ensembles ranging from elementary schools to professional symphony orchestras. His music has been heard in some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Sydney Opera House. In addition to numerous honors, he is the 2020 winner of the NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest and a recipient of the A. Austin Harding Award. As a conductor and educator, he maintains a global presence, and currently serves as Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred and MakeMusic.
During his visit, Balmages shared insight into one of his most meaningful current projects: The Gift of Giving.
The piece was conceived while he was in Australia, without a clear idea of where it would lead. That changed when he was contacted by Eric Thompson, director at Reeltown High School in Alabama, who shared the story of a student named Melody Jackson. During her sophomore year, Melody was diagnosed with terminal cancer. When the Make-A-Wish Foundation became involved, her request stunned everyone—not for a trip or a gift, but for new uniforms for her high school band, whose old uniforms were falling apart.
Deeply moved, Balmages knew immediately this was the story he needed to tell. The Gift of Giving became a tribute to Melody’s selflessness and the power of music to serve others. The piece was recorded at Auburn University, with Auburn students performing side by side with the Reeltown High School band—wearing the new uniforms Melody had wished for. Though she had passed away by that time, her presence was felt in every detail, including her engraved initials inside each uniform.
All proceeds from The Gift of Giving now benefit children with critical illnesses across the country. Balmages also shared how meaningful it was that J.W. Pepper was among the first to say “yes”—fully committing to support the project, further strengthening a long-standing relationship.
At its heart, The Gift of Giving is a reminder that one person can make a difference. Melody’s story illustrates the power of school music programs, the importance of community, and the role music plays in bringing good into the world. As Balmages shared, whether through organizing a donation drive, volunteering together, or creating music that responds to beauty or injustice, we all have a platform—and a responsibility to use it.
His visit served as a powerful reminder of why we do what we do: to support music educators, students, and communities—and to help music continue to change lives.
