Natasha Verhulst Wasn’t Taught Native American Music in School. Now a Teacher, She’s Changing That.

    Growing up in Wisconsin, Natasha Verhulst loved learning about music in school, but she realized there was no instruction pertaining to the music of her Ojibwe and Menominee cultural heritage.

    “I felt like I didn’t belong anywhere,” she said.

    As a music teacher herself now, Verhulst aims to bring Native American music education front and center, not only for Indigenous students at her own school, Keshena Primary on the Menominee reservation, but to classrooms everywhere.
