Key People: Randall Faber, Part 2

on

Here is the second part of our two-part interview with Randall Faber.  Dr. Faber and his wife, Nancy, are authors of the best-selling piano method, Piano Adventures® and many other educational piano publications.  Click here to read Part 1.

If it’s not confidential, will you share with us news of any Faber publications on the horizon?

First of all, we’ve been working hard to revitalize our PreTime to BigTime® series. Since the time of their release, these books have made such an impact on studios by affecting the students’ desire to practice.  We have the luxury now of being able to revisit the song selection and bring the books back to market with new, updated titles.  For example, we just heard last week that Billy Joel approved our use of “Piano Man” for BigTime Rock ‘n Roll.  We’ve added “Autumn Leaves” to BigTime Jazz & Blues — which is now off the press — and brought back “In the Mood” for FunTime Jazz & Blues.  We’re also working on a complete series of Kids’ Songs, extending through BigTime (Level 4).

Important, and on the horizon, are the Technique & Artistry Books 4 and 5. We’ve been holding off on these until having our publishing independence.  We want to provide some DVD support because the technique at this level gets even more sophisticated.  So teachers can be looking for these on the horizon toward the end of 2011 or early 2012.

We have worked for almost ten years on a preschool course.  Teachers have embraced My First Piano Adventure® for ages 5 and 6.  But concurrently with our daughter Vivian growing up, we have been working on early childhood education for the 3 1/2 and 4-year-old.  Nancy in particular has spearheaded that and has done wonderful work.  It has been hugely successful with our core of students over the years.  All the artwork and DVD are done.  We are finishing the final CD and Teacher Guide, so we are looking at 2012 for release.

Who is your favorite composer?

Chopin.  Beethoven would certainly be another favorite, and at times it was Mozart.  But I’d have to say Chopin because he knew so well how to write for the piano.

What do you like to listen to when relaxing?

I listen to a fair amount of pop music, actually.  When I’m in the car I’ll often put on public radio and listen to classical.  But I often turn the station and listen to pop just to stay current and listen to what is going on.  And, partly because I just enjoy a good singer, a good melody and well-done production — almost regardless of the style.  If it’s really well done, I have a lot of respect for it.

Who is your favorite current pop singer?

That’s a hard one to say.  This is funny.  I’m not sure most teachers will relate but I have been impressed with Mike Posner.  I think he is so expressive with his voice, a classy person and there is a quality of sound.  His songs are first-rate.  I’m also impressed with Beyonce.  I think she has a marvelous voice, very well-trained.  And she could cross styles if she wanted, a first-rate musician and entertainer.  Some of my old classics from all time have been Elton John, my hero when I was young.  And I’ve always liked the music of Billy Joel.

What motivates you?

Making a difference.  Many, many years ago I thought, what is my purpose for what I want to achieve?  I’ve really been committed to the concept of ennobling the human spirit.  So if I can make a difference for each of my students, make a difference for teachers, and help them make a difference for their students, then together we do indeed ennoble the human spirit.

Thank you, Dr. Faber, for giving us such an inspiring interview.
